Located on top of Wombat Hill (an extinct volcano) just behind Daylesford's town centre, the historic, ten-hectare Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens was established in 1862. This English-style civic garden is home to many significant trees and largely follows its original 19th century design.
Start your visit by driving around the original carriage trail (Elm Circuit Drive), which circles the entire grounds. Park in one of the designated areas and continue your exploration on foot.
You may like to climb the 77 stairs to the top of Pioneer Memorial Tower for stunning views across the surrounding region. Take care as the stairs are very steep. Children must be supervised closely.
There are many other highlights throughout the gardens, including the fernery, rotunda, and begonia house.
When hunger strikes, head to charming Wombat Hill House cafe, which occupies the original caretaker's cottage and serves coffee, cake, and light meals.
Are you a keen gardener? Leave time to visit the Friends of Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens' nursery (adjacent to Wombat Hill House), which is open for plant sales Thursday to Saturday mornings. Proceeds help fund maintenance projects in the gardens.
